Wrath in the New Testament

In the Bible there are two words that can be translated as wrath. This page simply serves to show all references of the two words. For a fuller discusion on the topic, see the wrath article.

 Orge ὀργὴ
 (All occurences as a reference to the Judgment of God)

Matthew 3:7 NASB
7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the ὀργῆς(orge) wrath to come?
Luke 3:7 NASB
7So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the ὀργῆς (orge) wrath to come?
Luke 21:23 NASB
23"Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and ὀργὴ (orge) wrath to this people;
John 3:36 NASB
36"He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the ὀργὴ (orge) wrath of God abides on him."
Romans 1:18 NASB
18For the ὀργὴ (orge) wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness
Romans 2:5 NASB
5But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up ὀργὴν (orge) wrath for yourself in the day of ὀργῆς (orge) wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

8but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, ὀργὴ (orge) wrath and θυμός (thymos) indignation.

5But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts ὀργήν (orge) wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.)
Romans 4:15 NASB
15for the Law brings about ὀργήν (orge) wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.
Romans 5:9 NASB
9Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the ὀργῆς (orge) wrath of God through Him.

22What if God, although willing to demonstrate His τὴν ὀργὴν (orge) wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of ὀργῆς (orge) wrath prepared for destruction?
Romans 12:19 NASB
19Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the ὀργῇ (orge) wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.
Ephesians 2:3 NASB
3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of ὀργῆς (orge) wrath, even as the rest.
Ephesians 5:6 NASB
6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the ὀργὴ (orge) wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

18"And the nations were enraged, and Your ὀργή (orge) wrath came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to reward Your bond-servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear Your name, the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth."

3For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; 4for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings ὀργὴν (orge) wrath on the one who practices evil. 5Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of ὀργὴν (orge) wrath, but also for conscience' sake.
Ephesians 4:31 NASB
31Let all bitterness and ὀργὴ (orge) wrath and θυμὸς (thymos) anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
Colossians 3:8 NASB
8But now you also, put them all aside: θυμόν (thymos) anger, ὀργήν (orge) wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

5After looking around at them with ὀργῆς (orge) anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.
Hebrews 3:11 NASB
11AS I SWORE IN MY ὀργῇ (orge) WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.'"
Hebrews 4:3 NASB
3For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, "AS I SWORE IN MY ὀργῇ (orge) WRATH, THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST," although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.


 Thymos θυμὸς

Revelation 15:1 NET
1Then I saw another great and astounding sign in heaven: seven angels who have seven final plagues (they are final because in them God's θυμὸς (thymos) anger is completed).

1Then I heard a loud voice speaking from the temple to the seven angels: "Go and pour out the seven bowls of God's θυμοῦ (thymos) anger on the earth!"
Revelation 12:12 NET
12Therefore you heavens rejoice, and all who reside in them! But woe to the earth and the sea because the devil has come down to you! He is filled with terrible θυμὸν (thymos) anger, for he knows that he only has a little time!"
